“So in any Christian ministry, including ministry among the poor, proclaiming and teaching the word of God must be central. And that is because the greatest need of the poor, as for us all, is to be reconciled to God and so escape his wrath. What makes Christian social involvement distinctly Christian is a commitment to reconciling the poor to God through the proclamation of the gospel.”

“The thing I desire most for my children is that they might be reconciled to God through the gospel. This desire does not mean I am unconcerned about their temporal needs. I do not simply teach them the Bible. I also try to create a loving home in which they can experirence life as blessing. But still my greatest concern is to teach and model the gospel of salvation. It is the same with the poor and marginalized. Love demands that I be concerned for their temporal needs. But the most loving thing I can do for the poor is to tell them they can be reconciled to God through Christ’s saving work.”
